Last Thursday, 5th of October, was Tree Day. Second class took a trip to Willsbrook Park to participate in a nature walk. We noticed all of the autumn colours and thankfully it was a dry and sunny afternoon. We learned some facts about trees, discussed why trees are important to us, identified the trees in our local environment and collected leaves and other autumn items such as conkers, helicopters and beech nuts. We used the leaves that we collected to identify what tree they belong to.

In LETNS we are lucky to have a playground that all the children have access to. The infants use the play ground at break times and all other classses have allocated slots during the school week. We also have large games on our yards such as Pinball, Mazes and Connect 4. Fifth and sixth classes use the basketball hoops at lunch time and first, second, third and fourth classes can skip or use chunky ground chalk to draw. Classes rotate through the activities each week and all get a chance to play on the astro turf pitches too.

One of the main projects of the Student Council work on this year was fund raising for a new sheltered bike rack. This will encourage children to cycle or bring their scooters to school. We had held a crazy hair day in term 1 and there will be additional fund raising initiatives next year tso that construction of the bike rack can commence.

Active Week got off to a wonderful start last Monday, with a visit to Croke Park. Our boys hurling team from 3rd - 6th class progressed to Croke Park this year. Children from 3rd - 6th class went to Croke Park to show their support for the team. The team played brilliantly! They showed extreme dedication and commitment to the match and to one another. Unfortunately, the boys did not win the match, but they left Croke Park smiling. They were so proud of their achievements, as are we all. Well done to all the staff who have helped with the GAA teams this year and to Derek and Donal for training the boys team.

Junior Infants, Senior Infants and First Class had some exciting P.E. lessons this year. They had a gymnastics teacher, Rachel, visit them for 8 weeks to teach them a number of different gymnastics skills. The children had the opportunity to explore a range of balances and movements. They thoroughly enjoyed this, so much so that we began gymnastics as an after-school activity.
