Newsletter Lá le Pádraig & School Calendar 2018-2019

16th March 2018

Dia Dhaoibh go léir ,

Seo Seachtain na Gaeilge, when we celebrate all aspects of Irish culture and history. Here in the school we have had a lovely week’s activities. Each day we listened to the nuacht as Gaeilge over the intercom, we had storytime, quizzes and many other opportunities to listen to and speak the cúpla focail. Marie Caren was here on Thursday to introduce our Junior Classes to Irish dancing. Later on Enda Reilly, musician perfomed music and some traditional Irish songs for our senior classes. The week concluded today with our Lá Glas and our classes performing songs and poems to entertain each other. Our main aim throughout the week was to encourage the use of spoken Irish through the various activities and everyone has really made a superb effort. Comhgairdeas do gach duine.

Go raibh  maith agat do Yvonne who has co-ordinated the week with the staff and has done a super job.

On Wednesday our teaching staff attended the second day of in-service in the new Primary language Curriculum. The curriculum is being phased in   the junior classes while the curriculum for the senior classes is currently at the draft stage. Our focus this time was on developing reading and writing skills in children. The day was an opportunity for us to further familiarise ourselves with the content of the curriculum as well as the resources available to support its delivery. It was an excellent days in-service with many practical ideas and lots of inspiration. Perhaps the key messages to share from the day….. The more opportunities children have to read and write , the more skilled they become in these areas .Free writing where children choose  a topic of their choice and write on a regular basis and drawing  will help significantly in the development of writing skills. Being exposed to a wide variety of reading materials and reading regularly is invaluable in promoting fluency in reading.

We are very lucky here in the school to receive so much support for children’s reading. Thank you to the many Parents and Grandparents who come in on a weekly basis to listen to children reading. Our Book Fair was once again a fantastic success. €4030 was sent on books over the week,   60% of this will come back to the school in books for our class and school libraries. Thank you very much to everyone who supported the fair and to Sharon, Barbara, Naoimi and Veronica for all their work in ensuring it ran so smoothly. We hope the children are enjoying all the lovely new books and with the holidays just around the corner, perhaps we can encourage a little time reading each day !

As previously mentioned the DES had allocated two half days for the Child Protection training. In our case this co-incided with the snow days.  To avoid any further school closures our teaching staff have undertaken to complete the training and prepare the Child Safeguarding Statement in their own time. This is very much appreciated. Our SNA team had the opportunity to complete the training during Wednesday’s in-service day.

A number of our sixth class children are making their confirmation in St. Mary’s parish today. We wish them and their families a lovely day as they celebrate this special occasion in their lives.

Attached is the school calendar for the school year 2018-2019
