Colour Mixing in 2nd Class

Last month for our value of Independence, we listened to the story of Elmer the Elephant. We discussed how Elmer's multi-coloured patchwork made him special and rare. Thorugh this story, we learned that being independent is not only about doing things for ourselves but also about being unique. Based on this story, we experimented with colour mixing. We used the primary colours of red, yellow and blue and some black and white to re-create Elmer's patchwork of colours.

Measures and Shapes in 2nd Class

In Karen and Sharon's 2nd classes, we have been learning about 2-D and 3-D shapes and length and capacity over the last few weeks. We have completed lots of different activities on these topics including 3-D shape nets, 2-D shape collages and creating 2-D shapes with pipe cleaners, lollipop sticks and Blu-Tac and that's just to name a few! Have a look at some photos from our maths work over the last few weeks.

Active Flag Committee Meeting

The Active Flag Committee met today to discuss what new equipment is needed for the school. The new equipment will be puchased with the funds raised from our very sucessful marathon relay. The children brainstormed in groups to get ideas and then we narrowed it down to each groups top 3 choices based on the what the school needs. We will be pricing the choices in the coming weeks to make the final decision on what to buy.

Active Committee Meeting - 16/03/18

On Friday 16th of March the elected members of our Active Committee gathered Donal's room for their monthly meeting. There was much on the agenda to be discussed so no time was wasted. The first order of business for the committee was to confirm an active slogan for the school. many great suggestions were made by the groups last week so Shauna put the three most popular ones to vote. Following the vote it was decided that "Don't sit if you want to be fit" would be the school's active slogan.

LETS Marathon Relay

The LETS Marathon Relay will be taking place next Wednesday 25th of April on out Astroturf. All the children, from Junior Infants to Sixth Class (and even some teachers and parents!), will be taking part and running a section of the relay. By the end of the day we will have ran a grand total of 42.2km as a team. Children are asked to donate €2 to take part in this event. The Active Flag Committee will be meeting to decide what new piece of PE equipment to buy with the funds raised. We are looking forward to seeing everyone participating and having fun on the day!

We learned about the work of Fairtrade and the importance of buying Fairtrade. We realised that we already had a lot of Fairtrade items at home. We brought these in and created a Fairtrade display. We were surprised at some products that were Fairtrade, such as jelly beans and moisturisers! We also created 'Fairtrade lunchboxes' with Fairtrade items inside them.

Our value of the month for April is respect. We have been discussing what respect means and how to show respect to others, ourselves, as well as to nature. We worked in groups to share ways to show respect in different situations. We then presented our ideas to the class. We came up with wonderful ideas of how to show respect.

We have been learning all about weather for the last few weeks. We learned about the water cycle and made our own mini water cycles in plastic lunch bags. We also made okta grids for measuring cloud cover. As well as this, we created rain gauges. We used these to measure the weather across a number of days.

We had great fun writing our own limericks in 2nd class. We first listened to some limericks and began to identify the rhyme and syllable pattern in the poems. We then wrote a class poem before creating our own poems in pairs. They are displayed outside our classroom if you would like to read them. We had lots of laughs writing and reading them.
